Buffet Galleys Case Study
Buffet Galleys

When Delta Rail wanted to convert 19 existing railway vehicles for First Great Western into buffet cars they turned to Birley Manufacturing to make these new servery area galley units.

Initially a full size mock up of the proposed unit was built in Birley's prototyping facility in Sheffield to dimensions supplied by the client, this was then inspected and refined allowing them to thoroughly consider height, storage and check in detail whether or not the required equipment such as coffee machines, water boilers, sinks, fridges and other ancillary equipment would fit into the final units. The ergonomics also had to be tested and approved by staff and user groups to get full buy in from all possible stakeholders.

Once approved the units were then manufactured to the client schedule and dispatched to Plymouth for fitting in accordance with the agreed rolling refit programme at the Laira depot. The units are now in daily service on the client's routes and the feedback from both customers and staff has been very favourable.
