Sheffield-based Birley Manufacturing is celebrating again after winning a significant order to supply more than 100 aluminium rail carriage underskirts for East Midland Trains.
The company has more than a decade's experience of manufacturing these specialist train parts, a factor which undoubtedly helped clinch this latest £1.1 million deal.
These skirts sit underneath the train to provide protection from stones and debris thrown up from the tracks by East Midland Trains' high speed mainline trains, operating from Yorkshire and the East Midlands to London St Pancras.
Tony Beckett, Senior Estimator for Birley Manufacturing commented: "Although they sit below the platform and can't be seen from above, these skirts are safety critical and are manufactured using highly specialist welding techniques that we have perfected here at Birley over many years."
Birley Manufacturing, based in Birley, specialises in the manufacture of bespoke metalwork and joinery for the rail, retail, industrial, banking, healthcare and leisure sectors.
This latest win comes hot on the heels of a number of major contract wins secured towards the back end of 2008, including deals to supply interior equipment for Wm Morrison supermarkets, Sainsburys, HSBC and the NHS.
Steve English, Birley's Managing Director says: "Wins like this are extremely encouraging, especially given the current economic climate, and are a further testimony to the skills and enthusiasm of the Birley team."
