Sheffield-based firm Birley Manufacturing has teamed up with several local waste management specialists as part of its new 'Zero to Landfill' scheme, aimed at dramatically reducing the company’s impact on the environment.
As the name of the scheme suggests, Birley is now determined not to send any of its industrial or office waste to Britain’s already overcrowded landfill sites. 'Zero to Landfill' is the brainchild of Birley's Environmental Team, which meets once a month to discuss how Birley might improve its environmental effects.
Birley's managing director Steve English explained: "The Zero to Landfill idea came up when a customer asked us to provide some details on our recycling policy. This made us take a long hard look at what we were actually doing with our waste. We already had some good systems in place, but after discussions with local waste management companies we realised that we could be doing much more."
Birley now has contracts in place with three local firms to ensure that all of its waste is either recycled or disposed of cleanly and safely, with as little environmental impact as possible.
All paper and card is recycled - Birley makes notepads from the blank sides of non confidential paper waste and has all general non-recyclable waste taken to a specialist energy recovery facility in Sheffield, where waste is incinerated to provide heat energy to buildings in the City Centre. Any metal waste that is a by-product of Birley's manufacturing process is recycled through a scrap metal merchant, whilst a third company deals with hazardous waste such as oils, solvents and paint packaging, recycling as much as is possible.
Steve continued: "We have now succeeded in achieving our aim of sending zero to landfill. We're aware that landfill space in the UK is due to run out in less than 10 years if changes are not made, so we knew it was important to address this now before it is too late and we hope that other local companies will follow in our footsteps."
